Overview of the Forest Carbon Offset Scheme
What is the Social Contribution Type Forest Carbon Offset Scheme?
The Social Contribution Type Forest Carbon Offset Scheme allows trading Forest Carbon Uptake on the voluntary market or using Forest Carbon Uptake as promotion. There are two ways to participate: Transaction and Non-Transaction
Participation
- Transaction
Forest Carbon Uptake Transaction Types
- Non-Transaction
-
Forest Carbon Uptake that can be used for other purposes including promotion.
* More relaxed standards are applied here, and Non-Transaction type project is not subject to verification process.
Forest Development Project
- Project Overview
Forest Development Project refers to Afforestation and Reforestation, transforming non-forest areas into forests through artificial and natural regeneration.
- Requirements for target areas
-
- - Transaction Type: (Afforestation) Land which has not been forest at least for the past 50 years.
(Reforestation) Deforested natural forests before December 31, 1989 which has been used for other purposes. - - Non-Transaction Type: Non-forest area at the time of the project application.
- - Transaction Type: (Afforestation) Land which has not been forest at least for the past 50 years.
Forest Management Project
- Project Overview
Forest Management Project aims to maintain forest health, induce vigorous growth, and increase carbon uptake of forests through sustainable forests management.
- Requirements for target areas
-
- - Transaction Type: Certified forest or forest with an established management plan.
- - Non-Transaction Type: Area where forest management can be carried out at the time of application.
-
Wood Product Utilization Project
- Project Overview
Using harvested hardwoods or processed wood products procured through forest management activities, such as afforestation, forest thinning and cropping.
- Project Requirements
-
- - Transaction Type: Use or purchase of wood products made of wood harvested domestically and legitimately.
- - Non-Transaction Type: Imported wood can be used.
Forest Biomass Energy Utilization Project
- Project Overview
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions by substituting some or all of the fossil fuels previously used with Forest Biomass Energy (pellet fuel, wood chips, etc.)
- Project Requirements
-
- - Transaction Type: Reduce greenhouse gas emission levels by using domestic forest biomass energy.
- - Non-Transaction Type: Imports may be used.
Revegetation Project
- Project Overview
Creating urban forests, living forests, and planting roadside trees stated in Article 2 of the Creation and Management of Forest Resources Act through revegetation, a direct human induced activity to increase carbon stocks on sites through the establishment of vegetation that covers a minimum area of 0.05 ha
- Requirements for target areas
-
- - Transaction Type: Non-forest land which does not meet Afforestation/Reforestation target area requirements and would be used to create urban forests, living forests, and planting roadside trees stated in Article 2 of the Creation and Management of Forest Resources Act
- - Non-Transaction Type: Non-forest land which does not meet Afforestation/Reforestation target area requirements.
Restraining Forest Conversion
- Project Overview
Maintaining or expanding vegetated area designated when obtaining permission to convert in accordance with Article 14 of the Mountainous Districts Management Act.
- Requirements for target areas
-
- - This is limited to Non-Transaction Type only.
- - Land obtained permission for conversion of mountainous districts in accordance with Article 14 of the Mountainous Districts Management Act.
Multipurpose Project
- Project Overview
-
- - Using by-products from plantation, reforestation, and forest management to generate forest biomass energy
- - Utilizing forest products of woods harvested from plantation, reforestation, and forest management.
Social Contribution Type Forest Carbon Offset Operating Standards
- Legal Basis and Purpose
-
Operating standards are aimed at determining the specifics of the Social Contribution Type Forest Carbon Offset, as outlined in Article 27 of the Act on the Management and Improvement of Carbon Sink and Article 24 of the Enforcement Decree of this Act.
